Do You Need Travel Car Insurance?

If you're planning to travel via car, then you might be wondering if you need travel car insurance. In a word, yes. However, what kind of coverage and how much you need will depend on your individual circumstances. This article will educate you further on the different types of vehicular insurance that you might want to consider before embarking on your travels.

If you are driving your own car during your travels, you should already have car insurance. However, if you have a limited amount of coverage, you may want to consider changing your policy. Some people have basic liability insurance only. This means that if they are involved in an accident that is their fault, their insurance only covers the medical expenses and property damages of the innocent party. Liability is fine if you're on a strict budget and it's all you can afford. However, when you're traveling long distances, the likelihood of a collision may increase. This is why you might want to talk to your insurance agent about getting collision coverage in addition to liability. Collision coverage will pay for the damage to your car if you are involved in an auto accident.

Now, if you are renting a car, there are two options from which you can choose. They are the rental car insurance you're offered at the counter, or a non-owner insurance policy you can purchase from your normal insurance agent. Let's take a look at the insurance you'll be offered at the car rental counter. Often you can choose the level of coverage you get. In my humble opinion, it's better to get maximum coverage and not need it than need it and not have it. There are four basic types of coverage that you can select: Collision damage waiver (CDW), personal accident insurance, liability insurance and personal effects coverage.

The second option for travel car insurance, as mentioned above, is to purchase a non-owner policy from your insurance agent. This is a good option that can save you money if you are a frequent car renter. While this type of policy normally provides liability, medical coverage, underinsured and uninsured motorist protection, it does not provide collision protection. For collision coverage, check with the car rental company to find out what your options are.
