Why Consider Travel Insurance Cancellation Coverage?
![]() |
People are traveling more frequently than ever before. Some people decide to go to international destinations for vacation purposes, others for business. Because of this, there are lots of different types of travel insurance that you can obtain. Many times, you will find that your best bet is a single trip or annual policy that offers a variety of different things including travel insurance cancellation coverage. If the policy you choose doesn't offer trip cancellation, you should definitely check on obtaining it.
Often, you are required to pay a non-refundable deposit or fee when booking a vacation package. Non-refundable means just that -- even if you need to cancel your trip, you will not get that money back. Unless, of course, you have trip cancellation protection. Why you cancel your trip will determine whether or not your policy will reimburse you. If you suddenly decide you just don't want to go anymore, you can most likely forget about seeing your money again. However, there are some circumstances where the coverage would provide you reimbursement.
Suppose you suffered injury or became ill right before you were set to depart on your trip. This would most likely be covered under your policy. If your home burned down or you were the victim of a natural disaster, this may also qualify. Maybe the circumstances apply to your travel partner. If the person you are traveling with suffers an unfortunate or unforseen illness, injury or tragedy, you may both be able to obtain reimbursement. These are only examples, of course. To find out exactly what your policy covers, ask your insurance agent. There are also types of coverage that offer reimbursement for a delayed or interrupted trip as well. This may be included in your cancellation policy, or it may not. It all depends on the specific type of policy that you have.
If you don't yet have a travel insurance agent, there are many different companies that offer coverage for international travelers. It's possible that your travel agent can refer you to the ideal company. If you are interested in travel insurance cancellation coverage, check and see if you can get it as part of a broader policy or if it must be purchased separately. Also, make sure you obtain it as soon as you book your trip to make sure you get the coverage you need.
