Do I Need Travel Car Insurance Cover?

Do I Need Travel Car Insurance?
We all travel by car all the time but when travelling longer distances you may wonder. Do I need travel car insurance cover? If you want the reassurance of knowing there will be someone available to help out in the event of problems then the answer is yes.

Deciding on the precise coverage you require will very much depend on your individual circumstances but there are a few different types of vehicular insurance that you might find suitable and decide are a worthwhile purchase before you embark on your travels.

If you plan on driving your own car during your travels, you should already have car insurance. This will have some limitations on coverage and you may want to consider changing your policy for a more comprehensive plan. Some people just have the very basic liability insurance only and this means that if they are involved in an accident that it is decided was their fault then their insurance will only cover the medical expenses and property damages of the innocent party.

Liability may be fine for your normal day to day life if you’re on a strict budget and it’s all you can afford but when you travel long distances the risks of a collision may be increased. It would make good sense to talk to your insurance agent about increasing your car insurance cover by adding collision coverage in addition to liability insurance. Having collision coverage will mean your insurance company will pay for damage to your car if you are involved in an auto accident.

If you are renting a car, there are a couple of different options you can choose. You will be offered a basic rental car insurance over the counter, or you can get a non-owner car insurance policy from your normal car insurance agent or online. With the regular car rental insurance you can choose the level of coverage you get. I always think the best option is to go for the maximum coverage to cover you for every eventuallity.

The four basic types of coverage you are usually offered are, collision damage waiver (CDW), personal accident insurance, liability insurance and personal effects coverage.

If you choose the second option we mentioned above and take out a non-owner policy from your insurance agent you may find it works out cheaper and could offer better coverage too. If you are a frequent car renter this will almost certainly work out a lot cheaper. While this type of policy normally provides liability, medical coverage, under-insured and uninsured motorist protection, it may not provide any collision protection so for your collision coverage you should check with your car rental company and ask them what your options are to obtain collision insurance
